Steven Friedman’s fascination with photography began when he stumbled upon a 35mm camera, while hiking in the Gatineau Hills. This experience launched Steven into an intensely focused exploration of landscape photography.
Since then, Steven has traveled extensively to capture his own vision of the natural landscape. Friedman’s imagery transports the viewer behind the lens of his camera to explore remote and inaccessible regions through his eyes, awakening a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
Steven Friedman’s expansive, evocative landscapes can’t help but bring you into the moment — the crispness of the air as the sun rises, the smoothness of sandstone carved by thousands of years of wind and water, the dance of intense colour. Friedman seeks pure and breathtaking landscapes and then patiently waits for the perfect light – the magic light that elevates the ordinary to a place that vibrates within the viewer’s consciousness.
About the Prints:
Steven Friedman’s fine art photographs are available as original limited edition prints in a number of sizes. Steven personally makes each print, using the finest digital print making techniques. Currently an HP Z3100PS GP 44 Inch Printer with Vivera archival pigment Inks on Hahnemuhle 100% Cotton Photo Rag Bartya Paper.
Accelerated light fading tests conducted by Wilhelm Imaging Research predict a display life of over 70 years before noticable fading of these UltraChrome K3 archival pigment prints.
Steven produces and sells numbered prints in only two media: laser-exposed chromogenic (Lightjet) prints; and pigmented inkjet prints, and can provide Lightjet prints on FujiFlex Supergloss if desired.
Steven uses Horseman, Hasselblad and Canon cameras to capture images either digitally or onto fine grained transparency film. Steven typically photographs each subject many times, revisiting a location over numerous years to get the right light, atmosphere, season and composition.
Transparencies are scanned using an Imacon 848 scanner. Each image whether film or digital original is fine tuned in Adobe Photoshop. Steven’s ultimate objective is to stay true to what was in front of the camera, but at the same time to create a more expressive print by subtle alterations of tonal value and colour.
