Norval Morrisseau is considered one of Canada's most important artists. Norval Morrisseau has been emulated by countless artists, yet he alone remains the original. His style is most commonly known as the Woodland school or style. From February 3 to April 30, 2006 the National Gallery of Canada presented a three month retrospective of Norval Morrisseau's art. This marks the first time in the history of the National Gallery that a native artist has had a solo show. The show was also restaged at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario, the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico and National Museum of the American Indian, New York City.
In 2005 Morrisseau himself created the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society (NMHS) in order to create a catalogue raisonné. All Norval Morrisseau paintings purchased through Steffich Fine Art will be submitted to the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society for inclusion in the catalogue raisonné.
We feel strongly that submitting paintings to the the NHMS for inclusion in the catalogue insures the client of their authenticity. Many galleries, and auction houses (including eBay) simply do not, cannot, or will not offer this service. Since Morrisseau himself created the society, we feel no other body can be as trusted. Collectors should be suspect of sellers who don't offer this service or feel the NMHS is not legitimate.
